Kevin Cross is an illustrator based in Portland, Oregon. Some his projects include Monsters Are Go! and Monkey Mod. He also founded The Mini-Comics Dump Truck and co-created the Big Illustration Party Time podcast with Joshua Kemble. (See our previous post.) You can find more of Kevin’s work at his illustration website KevinCross.net and his blog LASER BEAMS GO!!! I really admire Kevin’s work and what he is doing for the benefit of the art and illustration community.

The Cremaster Cycle

When I found out on Friday that The Cremaster Cycle is playing at Cinema 21 in Portland all this week I about lost it. Seriously! How cool is that! The Cremaster Cycle, directed by american artist Matthew Barney, is a series of five feature length films shot between 1994 and 2002. The films reference multiple genres, including westerns and horror. This series is, from what I can tell, visually stunning. It is generally considered one of the most important film works of the last 20 years. The Cremaster Cycle is not available on DVD and screenings are limited so… Yeah.

I’m gonna try and hit up Cinema 21 as much as possible this week, work permitting.

Great video by PNCA student Anthony Hudson. The video was created as part of a contest, which called for 30-second public service advertisements (PSAs) that creatively demonstrate how our communities benefit from Oregon’s public health system. This version is my favorite.

Robots Robots Robots was a huge success! We had about 100 people show up over the course of the evening. The DEFEND THE CITY mural was well received. People were really excited to be there! Dennis Nyback put on a great show and was a huge crowd pleaser. Here is a slide show that office mate William Robert Taylor took. Enjoy!

I’ll be showing rare great short Robot films including The Inventors (1934) in which Technocracy spoofers Stoopnagle and Budd built a Robot that terrorizes a girls school, Techno-Cracked (1933) a Ub Iwerks Flip the Flog cartoon again spoofing Technocracy with a home built runaway Robot, Rosey the Robot (1962) the pilot episode for the Jetsons, The Mechanical Monsters (1941) Superman battles flying robots, Robot Revolution (1980) about modern (at least then) robotics, and more. TenPod is a cool space for you to discover. Before the films you can see Robot artwork while sampling free cookies, popcorn and beer. Wow!
